Advanced Manufacturing Building

Advanced Manufacturing Building

Value: £18M

Type: New Build

Partner: G F Tomlinson

The Advanced Manufacturing Building is an expansion of the University’s Faculty of Engineering and hosts several world-leading research groups including: The Bioengineering Research Group, Advanced Materials Research Group (AMRG). The Machining and Condition Monitoring (MCM) research team and The National Centre for Macromolecular Hydrodynamics.

The building is the largest academic manufacturing teaching and research facility in the UK, providing facilities to support and shape the UK’s advanced manufacturing sector, related to automation, precision manufacturing, Additive Manufacturing (3D printing) and light weight composite materials.

Built across three floors, the 9000m2 building comprises:
• Modern engineering laboratories offering access to specialist equipment that organisations involved in research and development may not otherwise have access to, such as aerospace technologies and automotive development equipment.
• Specialist CAT C clean room with laminar flow benches installed, which is part of the Additive Manufacturing, where 3D printing ink-jetting onto pharmaceutical drugs is undertaken. It is also used for research and development of highly functional, durable and life changing items, such as prosthetic limbs, 3D printed electronics, complex pharmaceutical devices and advanced engineering components. The room incorporated sealed electrical systems to prevent the potential for sparks that could ignite fumes from chemicals being used within that space.
• Seminar and conference rooms
• Offices and meeting rooms
• Central atrium, with a floating staircase, providing open access to view laboratory areas.

Roof level provides a plant deck, plan room and features 128m2 photo voltaic panels.

The building achieved an impressive EPC ‘A’ rating and BREEAM ‘Excellent’.

The new building was constructed on the live city centre campus. To protect the safety of our staff, end users and the general public we enclosed the site within a solid perimeter hoarding, ensuring all construction activities were undertaken in a safe working environment and securely segregated. We developed robust Site Logistics and Traffic Management Plans which were implemented by our Project Manager and on-site management team.

This was the fifth project we delivered with the University of Nottingham on their Jubilee Campus. We therefore had a full understanding of their requirements and protocols, especially when working around live education sites and sensitive environments.

Project highlights
  • 124 University student engagements (from the University of Nottingham and the University of Sheffield)
  • 10 apprentice weeks on site
  • 14 work experience placements
  • 25 local school students engaged as part of a 3-day Budding Brunels event with the Construction Youth Trust
  • 2 full time employment secured for local residents following residents in partnership with Nottingham Jobs

“The quality of the build is excellent. We have delivered the project on time, we have delivered the project to budget and we’ve had smooth transition from a construction site and finished building into an operational facility. The result is that all the research groups moved in ahead of programme, the teaching spaces were completed ahead of programme.”

Richard Wigginton, Head of Capital Projects – University of Nottingham

Awards Won

  • RIBA East Midlands 2018
  • Best Large Commercial Project – LABC 2018
