Design and build of a new waste services depot for BCC at the former Atlas Works site in Tyseley, Birmingham. The scheme involves the provision of a new build facility on a brownfield site with extensive parking for the fleet and staff vehicles of BCC’s Waste Management Services. Repairs, maintenance and MOT servicing on the Council’s wide-ranging fleet of vehicles will be undertaken on site as well as MOTs on vehicles owned by the public.

On a 3 hectare site, the new facility comprises a two storey office building and a 3600m2 steel frame, metal clad vehicle maintenance building with various vehicle inspection pits, enabling the Council to relocate waste services currently delivered from two depots to one new purpose built super facility. EV charging points with the ability to install further points in the future are included. The building is also designed to be able to take the future power supply from a proposed energy waste station nearby. The design was inherited at RIBA stage 2+, and stage 3 was quickly completed and signed off as the agreed Scope. Significant care was taken during the PCSA stage to fully understand the customer’s operating processes so that the design allowed then to operate at maximum efficiency. Constructed in an industrial area with heavily trafficked roads, the widening of the existing entrances was carefully managed to prevent any disruption to the highway users.
