HMP Hewell Grange is a multiple security category prison for adult males, currently serving as Category D ‘Open’ site providing dormitory accommodation with an operational capability of 204. The Grange was first designated as a listed building in 1986 and has recently been upgraded to a Grade I listed status, with the grounds designated as Grade II.

ISG was awarded the complex refurbishment through the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) Framework. The refurbishment comprised the renewal of the life expired services to provide the establishment with fit for purpose MEP infrastructure, compliant with the Life Safety Code and MoJ Standards.

Maintenance had been unsympathetically undertaken to the MEP infrastructure over the last 15 years but significant parts of the original retained infrastructure had deteriorated. Repairs to these were progressively ineffective due to their condition and adhoc nature of previous repairs. The scope of works comprised installation of new electrical distribution system and replacement of the existing hot/cold water services to the main Hewell Grange building.

Sensitive restoration of the Grade I listed building was a primary focus of the project. Prior to works commencing we liaised closely with Heritage England to agree the design and methodology and subsequently received the required permissions. Once on site we liaised with Heritage England and the Conservation Officer and led a series of site inspections demonstrating compliance. All works were successfully undertaken in a live prison environment with strict security protocols. All staff and subcontractors were DBS checked and vetted by the MoJ for eligibility prior to being allowed onsite. Our Project Manager liaised closely with the Governor and Security Officer to collaboratively embed a phased decant strategy. Security was maintained while upgrading one dormitory at a time, before in-mate reoccupation and seamless transition to the next dorm.
