Khalsa Academy, Wolverhampton
Partner: Morgan Sindall
Procured under the Constructing West Midlands framework, the Khalsa Academy is a state-of-the-art campus located on the former Tarmac headquarters in Wolverhampton. It now provides 840 pupils with a cutting-edge learning environment, which also features impressive sports facilities and an auditorium to support an array of extra curriculum activities.
The scheme required a full refurbishment of a four-storey building and single storey canteen site. The old units were overhauled to provide an 8,800 square foot modern dining area and teaching spaces for cookery and music classes.
Educational needs were considered throughout design development – from developing bespoke design solutions around the user experience with the academy themselves to innovative solutions that overcame an incredibly complex brownfield site.
Facing a £2.5 million shortfall, this project nearly collapsed. But the swift appointment of Morgan Sindall through the Constructing West Midlands framework helped springboard the project to life. Morgan Sindall used the WRAP protocol to ensure expensive cart-away and type one could be re-used across the site. Along with careful foundation design changes, the team delivered the significant cost saving required to make the project viable.
